AppleTuts has recently started, and we are trying to grow as fast as we can!<br />
We like to keep track of our Alexa rank, and see how we are doing!<br />
This is why a Alexa Banner has been added to the bottom of the page, feel free to click and read our full traffic details.</p>
<p>I have been in web development for quite some years, so most emails i get are about how do i increase my Alexa Rank. Although this blog is about Apple and it&#8217;s software, i will show you some of my knowledge about increasing your Alexa Rank. Just read on, and it might be help full.
</p></div>
<p><span id="more-80"></span></p>
<p>In order to let your Alexa rank grow you have to make sure you spread your link.<br />
Digg your articles, stumble them, let friends take a look at them as this increase not only your Alexa rank but also your Page rank, and you will show up pretty fast in the famous Google Search engine.</p>
<p>Another tip is to set your browsers homepage to your blog(or website) so every time you open your browser it will generate some traffic by you.</p>
<p>Buy advertising spots at other websites, these will lead to a good income of traffic, that has effect on you Alexa rank.</p>
<p>Install the Alexa Widget on your website, this shows users your progress, and might be interested in the full details, so they will click the widget.</p>
<p>These are few small tips to get you started!<br />
Good Luck!</p>

<p>Apple Inc. has created a wonderfull background system that allows you to display many things on your Desktop background.</p>
<p>Your Mac comes with many default high resolution wallpapers that look awesome! But what if you want them all on your desktop?</p>
<p>Well, its posible, the desktop settings have some nice features, in this case rotating the image once in a while, so lets find out how we can do that.</p></div>
<p><span id="more-55"></span></p>
<h2>Opening the desktop preferences</h2>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1218322257126.png" alt="media-1218322257126.png" width="287" height="226" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>To get into the desktop preferences you have to right-click on your mouse and click <strong>Change Desktop Background&#8230;</strong></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Changing your desktop background</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1218322433755.png" alt="media-1218322433755.png" width="479" height="421" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>After you clicked Change Desktop Background, you will see that a new window has opened. In this window you can select a desktop background, for example a <strong>Nature</strong> wallpaper. When you click the Aurora wallpaper you will notice that the background will change instantly so you can see if you like it.</p>
<p>I like it but, i like all the nature wallpapers, so why not show them all?</p></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Rotating through different backgrounds</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1218322618120.png" alt="media-1218322618120.png" width="359" height="74" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>As you can see, there are a few options below the wallpapers, and the option we need is the <strong>Change Picture</strong> every &#8230;. seconds.</p>
<p>What this does, is changing the background of your desktop every 5 seconds in this case. We selected the folder Nature, so it will only pick ones from that album. You can enable the <strong>Random order</strong> to let them display in random orders, so you don&#8217;t know whats coming next every time.</p>
<p>When you entered all details, you can simply close the window, and enjoy the refreshing backgrounds!</p></div>
</div>

<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217800847149.png" alt="media-1217800847149.png" width="464" height="359" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>When you open up mail for the first time, a new window will show, saying <strong>Welcome to Mail. </strong>Now you will have to enter details for your first email account.</p>
<p>So enter your name into the <strong>Full Name </strong>field, your email in the <strong>Email Address </strong>field and enter the password for that email account, so it can verify the data with the mail server. <strong> </strong>When you entered all the details, click <strong>Continue</strong>&#8230;</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Incoming Mail Server</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217801367363.png" alt="media-1217801367363.png" width="464" height="359" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>Now you have to tell mail, where to get the emails from, so you have to enter the incoming mail server.</p>
<p>Now the first select box asks for a <strong>Account Type</strong>, 9 out of 10 that its going to be <strong>POP</strong>, this is the most used account type.</p>
<p>But say you have your own excange server, then select one of the other options.</p>
<p>You can enter anything in the description field, for example <strong>AppleTuts POP server.</strong></p>
<p>The incoming mail server is a address you recived from your mail provider, often starts with pop.domain.com, or mail.domain.com, your host also has given you login creditials, you need to enter those in order to gain access to your mail.</p></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Incoming Mail Security</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217802521383.png" alt="media-1217802521383.png" width="445" height="350" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>When you clicked next, again a new window will show asking you for security information.</p>
<p>If you want a secure encrypted connection, check the checkbox <strong>Use SSL</strong>, this will increase the security!</p>
<p>Now depending of what kind of <strong>Authentication</strong> you have, you might wanna change it to a other setting then <strong>Password.</strong></p>
<p>Although most of the time the default authentication type is just password.</p></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Outgoing Mail Server</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217802836315.png" alt="media-1217802836315.png" width="464" height="359" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>So we setup our mail account to receive email, but we still have to setup the outgoing mail server in order to send emails.</p>
<p>So its kinda like the POP server settings, it will ask you for a description for example <strong>AppleTuts SMTP Server, </strong>and the address of the <strong>Outgoing Mail Server</strong>, wich most of the time starts with smtp.domain.com or mail.domain.com, now some SMTP server require you to authenticate with the server in order to send mail. If this is the case, check the <strong>Use Authentication</strong> checkbox and enter the User Name &amp; Password that were given by your email provider.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Outgoing Mail Security</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217802867927.png" alt="media-1217802867927.png" width="464" height="359" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>Now just like the incoming mail server security, you also have the same option for the outgoing mail server.</p>
<p>So this has the exact same results as i explained before.</p></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Account Summary</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217803468219.png" alt="media-1217803468219.png" width="445" height="350" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>We are finished! Check the summary and make sure everything is correct, if not just hit the <strong>Go Back </strong>button.</p>
<p>If everything is correct, click the <strong>Take account online</strong> checkbox and hit <strong>Create</strong>!</div>
</div>

Activate it, and you can search for and open anything in its catalog instantly. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognize which items you are searching for based on previous experience. It also supports abbreviations, so you can type entire words, or just fragments of each. When not in use, Quicksilver vanishes, waiting for the next time you summon it.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Mac offers file sharing, this means other users from other computers can access your Mac to add, edit or delete files. You can share different folders and set custom permissions for them. So in this article i will show you how to enable file sharing and how to add new folders to share and setting up permissions for them.</p>
<p><span id="more-10"></span></p>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Opening system preferences</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217530586016.png" alt="media-1217530586016.png" width="296" height="286" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>To open the system preferences please move your mouse to the top left corner and clicking the Apple logo in order to open a new menu.</p>
<p>In this menu, you will find the <strong>System Preferences </strong>button<strong> </strong>, click this.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Opening the Sharing preferences</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217530988955.png" alt="media-1217530988955.png" width="325" height="158" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>After clicking the <strong>System Preferences</strong> button, the system preferences menu will popup.</p>
<p>Now you will see a whole bunch of setting types, but for this tutorial we need to enter the <strong>Sharing</strong> settings.</p>
<p>So just click the <strong>Sharing</strong> icon to edit those settings.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Chaning your Computer Name</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217531230259.png" alt="media-1217531230259.png" width="299" height="80" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>In order for other users to reach your computer, its needs an <strong>IP Address</strong> or a <strong>Computer Name</strong>. A name is much easier to remember then a IP, so lets give it a nice name. You could use your personal name, or the name of your company, just anything you want. When you have entered your new computer name, press <strong>Edit&#8230;</strong></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Enabling file sharing</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217531558604.png" alt="media-1217531558604.png" width="216" height="304" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>Now on the left side of the Sharing window, you will see all kind of services, we will explain all other services in other tutorials, so lets just focus on <strong>File Sharing</strong>. To enable File Sharing, click on the checkbox infront of the service.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Configuring shared folders</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217531867906.png" alt="media-1217531867906.png" width="125" height="219" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>You will now see a green light on the right, that indicates that file sharing has been enabled.</p>
<p>Below that you will see 2 columns, <strong>Shared Folders </strong>and <strong>Users</strong>. So lets share a folder shall we.</p>
<p>Click the + button below the <strong>Shared Folders</strong> column to add a folder.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Browsing for a folder</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217532040380.png" alt="media-1217532040380.png" width="215" height="187" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>When you clicked the <strong>add button</strong> ( + ), a new dialog will popup, where you can select a folder you would like to share, for example your movies folder.</p>
<p>Just click the folder once, and hit add.</p></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Setting permission rights for users</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217532218433.png" alt="media-1217532218433.png" width="328" height="82" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>Now that the folder is added, we can add users and give them permission to the folder.</p>
<p>By default, the<strong> main user</strong> account will have full access (Read &amp; Write) and the &#8220;Group&#8221; <strong>Everyone</strong> will have no rights.</p>
<p>Now let&#8217;s say we want everyone to have access to our movies folder, just click the arrows next to the permission and change it.</p>
<p>You will have 4 permission rights.</p>
<p><strong>1:</strong> Read &amp; Write :: Other users can read the directory and can add/edit and delete files.</p>
<p><strong>2:</strong> Read Only :: Other users can read the directory and get files from that directory, but can&#8217;t add any files.</p>
<p><strong>3:</strong> Write Only :: This means other users can only add files, but not read the directory, so they have to drop files onto that folders, thats why its called a drop box.</p>
<p><strong>4:</strong> No Access :: This means that this user or group has no access to that folder.</div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Setting connection types</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217534506030.png" alt="media-1217534506030.png" width="388" height="184" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>We enabled file sharing, added a folder, and changed the permission of that folder. Were almost done!</p>
<p>As you can see there is also a <strong>Options&#8230;</strong> button on the Sharing Preferences window. When you click this a new window will popup where you can change some extra options, like the connection types.</p>
<p><strong>Share files and folders using AFP</strong></p>
<p>AFP is the default connection and transfer type for mac, its a secure and fast transfer method.</p>
<p><strong>Share files and folders using FTP</strong></p>
<p>If you think AFP isnt fast enough, you can always try FTP, this increases the transfer rate, but logins and files you transfer will not be encrypted.</p>
<p><strong>Share files and folders using SMB</strong></p>
<p>SMB is a handy way to allow Windows users connect, you will need to add and enable a user account for this though.</p>
<p>Its a easy way to share, but its stores the password is a less secure manner.</p>
<p>Just a mac user? Stay with <strong>AFP</strong></div>
</div>
<div class="LessonStep top">
<h2 class="StepTitle">Connecting to a shared folder</h2>
<div class="StepImage" style="margin:10px 0px;"><img class="step_image" src="http://appletuts.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/media-1217534838491.png" alt="media-1217534838491.png" width="420" height="62" /></div>
<div class="StepInstructions">
<p>The sharing preferences window also shows you how to connect from another mac or pc.</p>
<p>If you enter this into the <strong>Finder</strong> -&gt; <strong>Connect to server</strong> field, the connection will be made.</p>
<p>Besides that, you can also use the sidebar in the finder, just click the correct mac in the network, and you will be able to see all shared folders of this user.</p></div>
</div>
