To burn your .DMG image onto a CD / DVD you need to right-click it and select open with and choose Disk Utility.
In this tutorial i am going to burn a copy of FireFox 3.0.
Disk Utility will open a new window.

Now in the Disk Utility select the image that will be located in the left sidebar

To start the burning of the .DMG image, click the Burn button in the top menu.

Next insert a blank CD or DVD to start the burning proccess.

In just a few minutes your image will be burned onto your CD or DVD!

In order to get new widgets you have to download them, Apple has made a special part of there website where you can download them from.

If you enter the adress given in the image above, you will be able to download widgets.

When you reach the Apple website you will notice the Widget Browser, this is where you can pick a category and choose your widget.

When you selected a Category and a Widget, the info of that widget will show, includig a download link.

Click the download button in order to save the widget to your Mac.

You can open the zip file using the Stuffit Expander, just hit OK and the file will be downloaded and extracted.

Now go to the directory where the file has been extracted. Now double click the Widget File

When you clicked the widget file, a new window will popup asking you if you would like to install the widget.

Just press Install and the widget will be installed.

When you pressed the install button you can choose to display it on your dashboard, hit the Keep button and your done! You got a new widget!

In order to start the Mac OS X Software Update utility, you click the Apple Logo in the top left corner, and click the line that says:

Software Update…

This loading bar indicates that the utility is checking for new updates, just wait for it to finish, it will only take a few minutes.

As you can see the utility shows all updates for software that has been installed on your computer.

When you click a update you will see a description below that tells you what the update contains.

The triangle before an updates means that a restart of your Mac is required, if you don’t have time for that right now, just simply uncheck the checkbox and just update that some other time.

When you have checked all updates that you want to install, hit the Install % Items

Now just sit back and relax and wait for the updates to finish, depending on how many updates you have this could take some time.

After all updates have been installed, you will receive a success message right away, just hit the OK button and your are up to date and ready to move on!

To get into the desktop preferences you have to right-click on your mouse and click Change Desktop Background…

After you clicked Change Desktop Background, you will see that a new window has opened. In this window you can select a desktop background, for example a Nature wallpaper. When you click the Aurora wallpaper you will notice that the background will change instantly so you can see if you like it.

I like it but, i like all the nature wallpapers, so why not show them all?

As you can see, there are a few options below the wallpapers, and the option we need is the Change Picture every …. seconds.

What this does, is changing the background of your desktop every 5 seconds in this case. We selected the folder Nature, so it will only pick ones from that album. You can enable the Random order to let them display in random orders, so you don’t know whats coming next every time.

When you entered all details, you can simply close the window, and enjoy the refreshing backgrounds!

To start mail, click the mail icon located in the dock by default, or in your applications folder.

When you open up mail for the first time, a new window will show, saying Welcome to Mail. Now you will have to enter details for your first email account.

So enter your name into the Full Name field, your email in the Email Address field and enter the password for that email account, so it can verify the data with the mail server. When you entered all the details, click Continue…

Now you have to tell mail, where to get the emails from, so you have to enter the incoming mail server.

Now the first select box asks for a Account Type, 9 out of 10 that its going to be POP, this is the most used account type.

But say you have your own excange server, then select one of the other options.

You can enter anything in the description field, for example AppleTuts POP server.

The incoming mail server is a address you recived from your mail provider, often starts with pop.domain.com, or mail.domain.com, your host also has given you login creditials, you need to enter those in order to gain access to your mail.

When you clicked next, again a new window will show asking you for security information.

If you want a secure encrypted connection, check the checkbox Use SSL, this will increase the security!

Now depending of what kind of Authentication you have, you might wanna change it to a other setting then Password.

Although most of the time the default authentication type is just password.

So we setup our mail account to receive email, but we still have to setup the outgoing mail server in order to send emails.

So its kinda like the POP server settings, it will ask you for a description for example AppleTuts SMTP Server, and the address of the Outgoing Mail Server, wich most of the time starts with smtp.domain.com or mail.domain.com, now some SMTP server require you to authenticate with the server in order to send mail. If this is the case, check the Use Authentication checkbox and enter the User Name & Password that were given by your email provider.

Now just like the incoming mail server security, you also have the same option for the outgoing mail server.

So this has the exact same results as i explained before.

We are finished! Check the summary and make sure everything is correct, if not just hit the Go Back button.

If everything is correct, click the Take account online checkbox and hit Create!

To open the system preferences please move your mouse to the top left corner and clicking the Apple logo in order to open a new menu.

In this menu, you will find the System Preferences button , click this.

After clicking the System Preferences button, the system preferences menu will popup.

Now you will see a whole bunch of setting types, but for this tutorial we need to enter the Sharing settings.

So just click the Sharing icon to edit those settings.

In order for other users to reach your computer, its needs an IP Address or a Computer Name. A name is much easier to remember then a IP, so lets give it a nice name. You could use your personal name, or the name of your company, just anything you want. When you have entered your new computer name, press Edit…

Now on the left side of the Sharing window, you will see all kind of services, we will explain all other services in other tutorials, so lets just focus on File Sharing. To enable File Sharing, click on the checkbox infront of the service.

You will now see a green light on the right, that indicates that file sharing has been enabled.

Below that you will see 2 columns, Shared Folders and Users. So lets share a folder shall we.

Click the + button below the Shared Folders column to add a folder.

When you clicked the add button ( + ), a new dialog will popup, where you can select a folder you would like to share, for example your movies folder.

Just click the folder once, and hit add.

Now that the folder is added, we can add users and give them permission to the folder.

By default, the main user account will have full access (Read & Write) and the “Group” Everyone will have no rights.

Now let’s say we want everyone to have access to our movies folder, just click the arrows next to the permission and change it.

You will have 4 permission rights.

1: Read & Write :: Other users can read the directory and can add/edit and delete files.

2: Read Only :: Other users can read the directory and get files from that directory, but can’t add any files.

3: Write Only :: This means other users can only add files, but not read the directory, so they have to drop files onto that folders, thats why its called a drop box.

4: No Access :: This means that this user or group has no access to that folder.

We enabled file sharing, added a folder, and changed the permission of that folder. Were almost done!

As you can see there is also a Options… button on the Sharing Preferences window. When you click this a new window will popup where you can change some extra options, like the connection types.

Share files and folders using AFP

AFP is the default connection and transfer type for mac, its a secure and fast transfer method.

Share files and folders using FTP

If you think AFP isnt fast enough, you can always try FTP, this increases the transfer rate, but logins and files you transfer will not be encrypted.

Share files and folders using SMB

SMB is a handy way to allow Windows users connect, you will need to add and enable a user account for this though.

Its a easy way to share, but its stores the password is a less secure manner.

Just a mac user? Stay with AFP

The sharing preferences window also shows you how to connect from another mac or pc.

If you enter this into the Finder -> Connect to server field, the connection will be made.

Besides that, you can also use the sidebar in the finder, just click the correct mac in the network, and you will be able to see all shared folders of this user.
